Mean Old Mother Nature

Emerson’s Nature was interesting. One statement that really stuck out to me was in Chapter 1 where he says ,” Nature never wears a mean appearance.” I disagree with this statement as Nature has shown time after time that it is horrible, destructive, and catastrophic. A example would be Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans in in 2005. Waters flooded the whole city, lives where lost , and reconstruction seemed almost impossible at the time, thanks to Mother Nature. I believe Emerson must have never seen a hurricane, tornado, or tsunami and its effects in his life to make such a statement.

  1. I can see where you are coming from about storms. But I must also point out that tornados and hurricanes, while terrible for humans and life in general, can be beautiful in a terrifying way. Plus these storms often bring out the best in humanity, causing us to help and care for one another like most wouldn't in other situations.

  2. I have to back up what Daniel is saying here. Mother Nature can do what appears to be terrible events at the time but these are mostly caused by an accumulation of human actions. Also, Hurricane Katrina wasn't even that bad. The only reason anyone remembers Katrina is because the levies broke. If we're going to bring up natural disasters can we at least bring up ones worth mentioning?

  3. I agree with Daniel, while I do see why you think nature is mean it is also breathtaking in how it is so much bigger than us even though it terrible for humans.

  4. There is sometimes beauty in destruction. The sheer power behind such natural disasters in beautiful. Satellite views of large storms offer a majestic imagine of the storm that we would otherwise be unable to see. Natural disasters also bring out the beauty in human nature as families and communities come together after facing them.
